Ma Qing Hua will continue as NIO Formula E's reserve driver for the 2018/19 campaign of the all-electric single seater series, continuing his ongoing relationship with the Chinese startup.
Ma, 31, made his competitive Formula E debut at the 2015 Paris E-Prix for Team Aguri and has so far made nine race starts in the championship, holding a best result of 11th place.
Alongside Formula E, Ma has also competed in Formula 3, A1 Grand Prix and the GP2 Series, rebranded as Formula 2 in 2017, in addition to making five practice appearances in Formula 1 for HRT and Caterham in 2012 and 2013.
“I would like to once again thank NIO for the opportunity to return as the reserve driver for the NIO Formula E Team, in this increasingly popular EV racing series," said Ma.
"It was a great pleasure working with the team in Season 4 with many positive experiences from my two outings and I am now looking forward to the rest of Season 5 with the new generation FE cars.”
NIO Team Principal Gerry Hughes explained that due to Ma's experience in Formula E, the Chinese racer was an ideal fit within the team:
“We are delighted to officially announce that Ma will continue in the role of Reserve Driver for the NIO Formula E Team for Season 5," he said.
"Ma is both a valued member of the race team and a key ambassador for motorsport in China. He is already familiar with all the procedures in Formula E and at NIO and is therefore the right choice for the role of reserve driver.
"We are excited to have him back onboard.”
Formula E's fifth season of competition will continue on January 26 with the Santiago E-Prix in Chile.
