Luca di Montezemolo has underlined the fact that Felipe Massa isn’t and never will be a No. 2 driver, despite calling for the Brazilian to support his Spanish team-mate in the hunt for the title.
The Ferrari driver has all but fallen out of contention for this years crown as the Italian outfit put their full focus behind Fernando Alonso’s challenge, something Di Montezemolo recently admitted was the right move.
“The decision to focus on Alonso has proven to be the right one,” the Ferrari president claimed.
In a move to dispel rumours that the team want Massa to permanently support Alonso whilst he is at Ferrari, Montezemolo assured fans that wasn’t the case.
“Felipe is and will always stay a number one driver for Ferrari,” he told the Ferrari website.
“I expect the performances of a number one driver from him – both in the next four races and with different tyres next year. Those will be crucial to bring us wins next season and to take important points from our opponents in the battle for this world championship.”
