Max Verstappen is set to be relegated to 18th place on the grid after taking on a new gearbox ahead of the United States Grand Prix.
Verstappen ran over the exit kerb at Turn 15 in Q1 at the Circuit of the Americas and the impact caused terminal damage to his right-rear suspension and a driveshaft.
Verstappen had already set a time quick enough to secure progression into Q2 and was set to start from 13th place, owing to both Toro Rosso drivers taking on engine penalties.
But Red Bull has deemed it necessary to change the gearbox in his RB14 and, as this is before the mandatory six event run has expired, he will drop five places.
Verstappen last year started the race in 16th place, going on to classify in fourth, having taken third on-the-road before being sanctioned for an off-track pass on Kimi Raikkonen.
Verstappen’s demotion means Fernando Alonso will move up to 13th on the grid, having initially qualified 16th, while Sergey Sirotkin, Lance Stroll, Marcus Ericsson and Stoffel Vandoorne will also gain spots.
The back row will be completed by the Toro Rosso drivers, as per their pre-event penalties.
