Mick Schumacher moved into the lead of the European Formula 3 Championship with his fourth successive victory, this time at the Red Bull Ring.
Schumacher claimed a hat-trick of wins at the previous round at the Nurburgring to bring his season tally up to six, leaving him just three points shy of Red Bull junior Dan Ticktum in the standings.
Schumacher claimed pole position for the opening race at the Red Bull Ring and preserved his position at a rain-hit start, as sixth-placed Ticktum dropped to the foot of the top 10.
Schumacher kept Prema team-mate Robert Shwartzman at bay throughout the race, as conditions gradually dried, to pick up his seventh win of the campaign, all of which have come in the last 11 races.
“At the start and on the first few laps, I had to defend my position from Robert,” said 19-year-old Schumacher.
“At that time, the track was still quite slippery and I didn’t want to take too many risks.
“After that, I was able to pull clear a bit and tried to save my tyres as much as I could.
“I am very happy that things were going so well for me at the wet and drying track.
“And I am also happy to have taken the lead in the Drivers’ standings.”
Ticktum recovered from a difficult opening lap to claim eighth, but Schumacher’s victory means the Prema driver now heads the standings by 18 points, with 125 up for grabs across the remaining five races.
Schumacher has also claimed pole position for the second and third races of the Red Bull Ring weekend, both of which will take place on Sunday.
Ticktum will start eighth and seventh respectively in Sunday’s races.
The pair are striving to succeed 2019 McLaren F1 racer Lando Norris as champion.
