Mick Schumacher claimed a hat-trick of victories during the European Formula 3 round at the Nurburgring to drastically reduce Dan Ticktum’s title advantage.
Schumacher led home Prema team-mate Robert Shwartzman in each of the three races to double his 2018 win tally, becoming the first driver in two years to complete a clean sweep.
Schumacher’s haul of 75 points enabled him to vault into second in the standings, behind only Dan Ticktum, whose advantage was reduced to three points.
Ticktum finished third to Prema duo Schumacher and Shwartman in Races 1 and 2, before taking fourth in the finale, as Hitech’s Alex Palou mounted the rostrum.
“This weekend was the best of my career in motor racing to date,” said Schumacher.
“I am now closely behind Dan, but I am not looking at the standings in the championship too much.”
Ticktum commented: “There were a few people shaking their heads this weekend as someone has found a bit of pace from somewhere, a bit of a mystery but that's not my problem.
“I am just keeping my head down and working with the guys to make the best out of what we've got and we are looking forward to the Red Bull Ring.”
Juri Vips and Marcus Armstrong remain in title contention though both lost ground on Ticktum.
Vips was embroiled in two incidents and came away with a meagre eight points from the weekend, while Armstrong took a fourth, a fifth and a sixth from the trio of races.
