Jean Todt: ‘More than one’ party interested in 2020-23 tyre supply

FIA President Jean Todt says that there is more than one company interested in becoming Formula 1’s sole tyre supplier for the 2020-23 period.

The FIA opened a tender in July calling for parties interested in becoming Formula 1’s sole tyre supplier.

Formula 1 has had just one company supplying rubber to all teams since Michelin withdrew at the end of 2006, with Pirelli replacing Bridgestone for the 2011 season.

The deadline for interested parties elapsed on Friday night.

“I don’t have the result yet of who has been applying for the tender,” Todt confirmed during a media briefing at the Italian Grand Prix.

“I know it’s more than one. But I knew since a while now before August that Michelin were not going to compete for the tender.”

Successful bidders will now be submitted to the Commercial Rights Holder [Liberty Media], which will conduct negotiations and make the final selection it proposes to the FIA.

The next phase of tyre regulations is set to see the sport switch from using 13-inch wheels to 18-inch wheels, with the change poised to be introduced in 2021.

Tyre blankets are also set to be outlawed when the change in wheel size is implemented.

It was outlined in the tender that the "overriding objectives" for tyres are the "improvement of the show, driveability characteristics, absolute performance [and] operating conditions".
