Dane Cameron of the #7 Porsche Penske 963 topped the opening free practice session for the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s Six Hours of the Glen.
As championship leader, as well as his teammate Felipe Nasr, Cameron commenced his weekend on a high note at Watkins Glen International with dry, hot and windy track conditions.
The three-time IMSA SportsCar champion set a fastest lap time of 1:34.175 early on during the session before 31 laps in total were completed with Nasr.
Whelen Cadillac Racing’s #31 V-Series.R finished second-quickest in the hands of Tom Blomqvist with a 1:34.347 which was conversely set later on in the #31’s 35-lap running.
In third place in the GTP category was the Detroit Grand Prix-winning #10 WTRAndretti Acura ARX-06 which completed a 1:34.452 by Felipe Albuquerque.
BMW M Team RLL’s highest place M Hybrid V8 took fourth position owing to a 1:34.575 lap time by Philipp Eng.
The other Porsche Penske, the #6, rounded off the top-five after Nick Tandy drove a quickest lap time of 1:34.756.
In the LMP2 category, Mikkel Jensen put the #11 TDS Racing Oreca 07 with a 1:35.531 out of 41 laps completed by the driver crew, the most completed out of all the 56 entries.
Felipe Fraga put the #74 Riley Oreca in second from a 1:35.577, followed by Nico Varrone’s #81 DragonSpeed Oreca which set a 1:35.750 time.
Fourth place in the category was taken by the #8 Tower Motorsport Oreca and Charlie Eastwood who laid down a 1:36.447, followed by Connor Zilisch’s 1:36.490 in their championship-leading #18 Era Motorsport Oreca.
In GTD Pro, the most recent class race winners were at the top in the #77 AO Racing ‘Rexy’ Porsche 911 GT3.R after Laurin Heinrich put a quickest time of 1:45.242.
Second in the combined GTD and GTD Pro field were the #80 Lone Star Racing team with their Mercedes-AMG.
Scott Andrews set a fastest lap time of 1:45.402 to put them at the front of the GTD class.
They were followed by the #1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 (GTD Pro) which completed 22 laps during the 90-minute session, the fastest of which being a 1:45.590 by Bryan Sellers.
Ross Gunn’s 1:45.764 put the #27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage in third place in the GTD Pro category, as Alessio Rovera took fifth in the combined GTD fields in the #023 Triarsi Competizione (GTD) Ferrari 296 with credit to a 1:45.862 lap time.
The second free practice session will continue the proceedings at 2.10pm BST/9.10am EST on Saturday 22 June, and will also run at 90-minutes in duration.
