Michael Schumacher’s 2001 title-winning Ferrari has sold for over $7.5 million at an auction in New York.
Schumacher’s F2001 was put up for sale and went under the hammer at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York on Thursday evening, with the winning bid fetching $7,504,000.
The car, chassis 211, was piloted by Schumacher to victory around the streets of Monaco, and also in Hungary, where he clinched the world title, his fourth of seven individual triumphs.
The winning bid was far higher than the estimate placed upon the car, which was expected to sell for between $4 and $5.5 million.
Schumacher claimed nine wins in 2001, comfortably beating nearest opponent David Coulthard to the title.
