Force India’s Sergio Pérez says he expects to have his future resolved by the time Formula 1’s ‘flyaway’ sequence of events begins next month.
Pérez has raced for Force India since 2014, following previous spells with Sauber and McLaren, and holds seventh in this year’s standings, with a best of fourth in Spain.
Pérez hinted in Hungary that he wanted to resolve his future over the summer break but while he commented there is “not a lot of news to report”, he nonetheless expanded on the current situation.
“I’m quite close,” Pérez said on resolving his future.
“As you know every deal I do involves my Mexican sponsors, right now they are in discussions, hopefully soon we can be in a position to announce something.
“I think between now and hopefully once we go into Asia I [can] have my future secured.
“But, I’m in no hurry, I know that I’m in a good position so I want to focus basically on extracting the performance from the car and having a good weekend.”
Pérez also conceded that the developmental direction of Force India’s VJM10 has not been conducive to his driving style across recent races, a factor he hopes can be resolved.
“I feel that the car has developed pretty much every race and not really suiting my style,” Pérez said, amid complaints of understeer.
“I tend to carry a lot of speed on the [corner] entry and that has been one of the problems in the last couple of races.
“We’re trying to sort that and we came to the conclusion for qualifying that I have to adapt my style to it.
“Hopefully now we kind of figured out the issue, it’s not a big issue, as when you look at our results we’ve been taking the maximum we could in the last couple of races but it’s something we can still improve.”
