Arrow McLaren has announced that Callum Ilott will fill in for an injured David Malukas at the team’s preseason test later this week.
The test will take place at Homestead-Miami Speedway and will serve as a chance for Ilott to get familiar with the car and the team should he be called up to compete in the #6 entry for the opening race of the season.
Malukas was set to make his debut with Arrow McLaren on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida on the weekend of March 10, but he injured his wrist in a mountain biking accident just over one week ago.
Doctors estimate his recovery time at six to seven weeks, putting his return well past the start of the 2024 IndyCar season.
“Obviously, I feel sorry for David [Malukas] and the team,” said Ilott ahead of his test. “It’s not easy to be in this position especially just ahead of the start of the season. I wish him the best and a speedy recovery.
“I’m glad I’m able to help out the team, and it’s a privilege to test this week with Arrow McLaren. I’m thankful they’re considering me for the opportunity.”
Ilott received a seat fit with Arrow McLaren last week, and will be at the test along with Pato O’Ward and Alexander Rossi.
A decision has not yet been made if Ilott will be behind the wheel for the race in St. Pete, but it seems all but a done deal at this point.
“We all wish David a speedy recovery, and we’re working out some options with the #6 NTT DATA Arrow McLaren Chevrolet crew in the meantime,” said Team Principal Gavin Ward.
“Callum had a seat fit last week and will test with us in Homestead, and we’re looking forward to working with him this week. Then, hopefully we’ll be able to confirm our roster for St. Pete soon after.”
Ilott is available to fill in for the first round of the IndyCar season after having parted ways with Juncos Hollinger Racing near the end of last year.
The 25-year-old Briton has a deal to race in the Jota Sport Hypercar for the 2024 WEC season, but there is a gap in its schedule for St. Pete, and also for the $1 million challenge from The Thermal Club should the team ask him to fill in for that event as well.
