Fernando Alonso it seems can't escape Honda's reliability troubles as he retired from the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 with an engine failure with just 20 laps remaining.
The McLaren driver, who missed the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend to race in his first IndyCar event, was running seventh on lap 180 of 200 when he slowed on the main straight with smoke pouring from his McLaren-Andretti.
The Spaniard led 25 laps throughout the opening 100 laps, but dropped back during a restart, falling back to tenth before he started to climb back up the order.
As he exited his IndyCar, the crowd rose to their feet and aplauded the two-time Formula 1 World Champion.
Speaking after his retirement, Alonso said he would be back in the future: "Yeah, obviously. It's very early. I feel competitive, but I will come back. It will be easier the second time.
"Really good fun, thanks to IndyCar, thanks to the fans. One of the best experiences of my career."
