Romainb Grosjean and Jolyon Palmer have both been handed five-place grid penalties for the Chinese Grand Prix, after race stewards deemed they failed to slow sufficiently for double waved yellow flags.
The pair were on flying laps when they came around the final corner to find Antonio Giovinazzi's Sauber in the middle of the track after the Italian spun and hit the wall. Yellow flags were shown at the time, forcing both to back off.
However the FIA stated that both Grosjean and Palmer "attempted to set a meaningful laptime after passing through a double waved yellow marshalling sector" during Q1.
Although both claimed to have backed off significantly, the stewards disagreed, adding that the Haas and Renault drivers "made no attempt to significantly reduce his speed in the area of a double waved-yellow flag."
Grosjean qualified 17th and will therefore start from 19th. Palmer qualified 18th and will therefore start last, promoting both Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon.
Both drivers were also given three penalty points, brings Palmer's 12-month tally to seven and Grosjean's to three.
