Formula 1 drivers have been prohibited from overtaking in the exit of the Abu Dhabi pit lane after an incident during second practice.
World Champion Max Verstappen overtook both slow-moving Mercedes drivers along the downhill plunge, and into the tunnel, before passing the Alpine of Esteban Ocon.
Verstappen explained that “they are all driving slow, and I want to go out because, you know, we are limited on time and they just keep on driving in the middle. And then when I tried to pass they tried to squeeze me in the wall, so….a bit silly.”
In his updated event notes, issued on Saturday morning, Race Director Niels Wittich clarified the situation.
“Overtaking is prohibited in the pit exit road unless a car slows with an obvious problem,” Wittich wrote, in an addition to the existing rules.
