Sebastian Vettel crash interrupts Ferrari/Pirelli wet test

Ferrari’s day of wet-weather tyre testing in association with sole supplier Pirelli was interrupted after Sebastian Vettel suffered a crash at Fiorano.

Pirelli has been granted two days of wet weather running in order to gather data for its 2018 tyres, with Vettel in action in Ferrari’s modified 2015 car on Thursday.

Images surfaced online showing Vettel sliding wide at a left-hander at the Italian test track and hitting the barriers, during a test which took place in cool conditions.

Pirelli has been striving to improve its wet weather tyre after several drivers criticised its performance last season, most prominently in Britain and Brazil.

Formula 1 teams are set to devote part of the final day of the first test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to wet running, unless inclement conditions occur during the opening three days of action.

Pirelli will this year introduce tyres which are 25 per cent wider front and rear compared to the sizes used up until the end of the 2016 campaign, and has prepared for the move by conducting private running with Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull having all provided modified 2015 cars.
