McLaren confirms Jost Capito departure after only five months

McLaren has confirmed that Jost Capito has left his role as CEO, just five months after he formally started working with the team.

McLaren announced the recruitment of Capito in January 2016, though the German’s existing duties with Volkswagen's title-winning WRC team meant he did not officially begin his role until September.

However, Capito’s future was thrown into doubt when Ron Dennis was ousted as McLaren’s Chairman towards the end of 2016, with Zak Brown installed as executive director.

McLaren attempted to reach a solution with Capito but ultimately this was not forthcoming, and Capito has now departed the team.

"Jost Capito joined McLaren after four successful years at VW Motorsport, with a strong commitment to bringing success back to McLaren," a spokesperson confirmed to Motorsport Week.

"He wanted to build again a winning team and fully focus on making the McLaren Formula 1 car competitive, with the aim of winning world championships in coming years.

"Regrettably, we have not been able to find common ground with Jost with regard to what is and will be needed to make the team successful again.

"As a result, we have agreed that he will leave McLaren Racing and will now consider other opportunities. We wish him success in his future endeavours.”
