Lewis Hamilton will start the United States Grand Prix from pole position after setting the pace in qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas.
The four-time US GP winner set the pace after the first Q3 runs, before going quicker on his final attempt to put in a 1m34.999.
Championship leader and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg couldn’t quite beat Hamilton, finishing two tenths further back.
Daniel Ricciardo was third fastest, just over half a second down on Hamilton’s time, with Max Verstappen fourth.
Red Bull opted to split strategies in Q2, with Verstappen making it through to the top 10 shoot-out on the softs, which will be the tyre he will start the race on.
Kimi Raikkonen moved ahead of his team-mate Sebastian Vettel with his final lap, the Ferrari duo just ahead of Nico Hulkenberg, Valtteri Bottas, Felipe Massa and Carlos Sainz Jr.
In Q2, late improvements from rival drivers saw Sergio Perez fall into the drop-zone. Fernando Alonso and Daniil Kvyat, who was confirmed at Toro Rosso next year earlier in the day, were next up.
Esteban Gutierrez was also eliminated from qualifying in Q2 at Haas F1’s home event, ahead of Jolyon Palmer and Marcus Ericsson.
Haas took a hit in Q1 when Romain Grosjean was the first driver to drop out in 17th, with Kevin Magnussen joining him.
Jenson Button did his first lap on the soft tyre but his final super-soft run involved traffic and he finished 19th in the session, ahead of Pascal Wehrlein, Felipe Nasr and Esteban Ocon.
