Nico Rosberg will start the Japanese Grand Prix from pole position after beating his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton by 0.013 seconds.

Hamilton held the advantage after the first runs in Q3 but a 1m30.647 in the closing minutes put Rosberg back ahead with an unbeatable time.

Kimi Raikkonen was three tenths off the front-running pace in third, with Sebastian Vettel fourth in the second Ferrari – but he has a three-place grid penalty.

Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo were fifth and sixth in Q3, ahead of Sergio Perez and Romain Grosjean.

Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa left it late for Williams in Q2 but both were eliminated, qualifying 11th and 12th.

The Toro Rosso duo of Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz Jr., who suffered a spin at the Spoon Curve on his last lap, were next up. Fernando Alonso and Jolyon Palmer rounded out the Q2 drop-zone.

Jenson Button was the first driver to be knocked out of Q1, missing out on the second segment of qualifying at Honda’s home race by 0.032 seconds. He qualified 17th, ahead of Kevin Magnussen’s Renault.

Marcus Ericsson briefly made it out of the drop-zone before being demoted to 19th as the final laps were completed, finishing ahead of team-mate Felipe Nasr, Esteban Ocon and Pascal Wehrlein.
