Nico Rosberg clinched his first victory at the Monza circuit with a controlled Italian Grand Prix drive, beating his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
The German driver had a strong start to storm into the lead, with Hamilton bogging down and falling to sixth on the opening lap.
Mercedes went for a one-stop strategy, with a long first stint for both drivers on the soft tyre after setting their best Q2 times on the compound in qualifying.
Rosberg was able to establish a comfortable lead in the early stages and never looked challenged at Monza, coming home to win his seventh race of the season and cut the gap to Hamilton further in the title fight.
Hamilton bounced back from his poor start, quickly overtaking Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull, before getting stuck behind the Williams of Valtteri Bottas.
He eventually passed the Finnish driver and moved up to second place when the Ferrari duo pitted for the second time.
Despite closing in on Rosberg at one point, he eventually finished 15 seconds adrift of his team-mate. Sebastian Vettel gave Ferrari a Monza podium with third, having moved into the top two at the start.
Kimi Raikkonen was a slightly distant fourth, with Daniel Ricciardo finishing fifth after a fantastic move on Bottas late in the race at the first chicane.
Bottas finished in sixth, with Max Verstappen recovering to seventh after a poor start. Sergio Perez, Felipe Massa and Nico Hulkenberg completed the top 10.
It was a rather calm and uneventful race, the most dramatic incident taking place on lap two when Jolyon Palmer and Felipe Nasr collided at the exit of the first chicane.
Pascal Wehrlein and Daniil Kvyat were the other two retirements due to car issues.
