Max Verstappen has claimed pole position for Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix as he thrashed the competition on Friday evening at the Lusail circuit.
Lando Norris emerged as the Dutchman’s nearest challenger but had his best lap deleted for exceeding track limits, demoting him to 10th.
The second McLaren of Oscar Piastri, who had risen to third courtesy of his team-mate’s mishap, then also had a lap time removed, dropping him to sixth.
George Russell has been promoted to the front row and will line up one place in front of Lewis Hamilton in the sister Mercedes.
The sole Aston Martin in Q3 of Fernando Alonso wound up fifth, ahead of Piastri, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, the two Alpines and Valtteri Bottas in the Alfa Romeo.
Both Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez failed to progress to Q3, the latter having his best lap time deleted for exceeding track limits at Turn 5.
