Lewis Hamilton topped the first practice session for the British Grand Prix on Friday morning, going marginally quicker than Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, with the pair split by just +0.033 seconds.
The session started under cloudy and mild conditions in front of packed grandstands as Sebastian Vettel debuted the new Halo 2 device for a single installation lap, before removing it to begin his set-up work for the weekend.
The Ferrari driver finished fourth quickest behind Nico Hulkenberg. The Force India driver once again showing strong form following his front-row start in Austria last weekend.
Hulkenberg finished eight tenths adrift of the Mercedes duo, though the gap is likely larger than it appears after Mercedes only used the medium compound tyre, compared the majority of the grid running the softs.
Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth fastest ahead of the newly re-signed Kimi Raikkonen in sixth.
The second Red Bull of Max Verstappen was seventh ahead of Sergio Perez, Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso.
The top ten made up of six different teams and all four engine manufacturers thanks to Alonso's best lap, 1.8 seconds down on Hamilton, also on the medium compound.
Charles Leclerc made his debut with the Haas team, finishing 18th quickest, more than a second adrift of Romain Grosjean. The Monegasque driver enjoying a spin at Turn 3 during his early run.
