George Russell wound up fifth, three positions ahead of Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes pair were separated by Fernando Alonso and Lando Norris.
Yuki Tsunoda hauled his AlphaTauri into the top 10, ahead of Alex Albon’s Williams.
Meanwhile, Felipe Drugovich, driving in FP1 for Aston Martin in place of Lance Stroll, set the 18th quickest time.
