Reigning Indy 500 winner and two-time Indycar champion Josef Newgarden will make his IMSA GTP debut at Petit Le Mans in October with Porsche Penske Motorsport, the team has announced.
The American will join Matt Campbell and Felipe Nasr in the #7 Porsche 963. The two won their first overall IMSA race, and first in the GTP class, last time out at Road America.
Newgarden, who races for Penske in Indycar, made his IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship debut at Daytona in January, in the LMP2 class with Tower Motorsports in an Oreca 07-Gibson, finishing fifth in class.
I have a lot of respect and admiration for both the Penske and Porsche brands, and the combination between the two through Porsche Penske Motorsport is a dream scenario for any racing car driver and is an absolute honor to be a part of,” said the 32-year old.
“Watching the dedicated teams build this program from the ground up over the last couple of years has been exciting to watch, and seeing both Porsche 963 get wins this year and compete for championships shows that all the hard work has paid off.
“My goal is to add to the program and help support the tremendous efforts that Porsche Penske Motorsport have put in place. With some good fortune, I’m sure we can turn effort into results together.”
In the sister #6 car, Laurens Vanthoor, who races for Porsche in the concurrent 963 Hypercar programme in the FIA World Endurance Championship, will join Nick Tandy and Mathieu Jaminet for Petit Le Mans.
The race will be held at Road Atlanta on Saturday 14th October, closing out the season.
