Fernando Alonso says he would regret turning his back on Ferrari should they manage to win the championship this season.
The Spaniard left Ferrari to join the new McLaren-Honda partnership at the beginning of 2015, having grown tired of the Italian outfit's failure to beat Red Bull and Mercedes to the titles during his time with the team.
However Ferrari enjoyed an upturn in performance last year – winning three races – and look to be in an even better position this year.
Speaking ahead of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, Alonso admitted he would regret leaving if either Sebastian Vettel or Kimi Raikkonen managed to win the title, knowing he would have had the same opportunity to do so had he stayed.
"If they win the championship, then probably yes, because I had a contract last year and this year with them," he said.
"So if they win the championship, probably I will find I could have had that opportunity as well, if I was able to drive as good as the champion, if they win. So that will be the case. But this is a big if."
