Team bosses discussed the matter of overtaking during a two-day meeting in Geneva this week and believe there is a simple solution to promote on-track passing.
The F1 Strategy Group has agreed that greater leniency from race stewards when it comes to failed passes will give drivers the confidence to attempt an overtake, without major repercussions such as drive-through penalties or penalty points.
They will therefore request that the stewards take a more relaxed approach and only penalise dangerous moves, rather than attemps which result in minor contact or damage.
The change should result in fewer penalties, reversing the current trend which has seen an increased number of penalties handed out per race weekend than ever before.
