Pastor Maldonado has visited FIA World Endurance Championship Hypercar hopefuls Isotta Fraschini at the company’s headquarters in Milan, Italy.
The former F1 driver and one-time Grand Prix winner has been out of international racing for the last few years. He last competed in sportscar racing in the 2018-2019 WEC ‘super season’ for DragonSpeed, racing in the LMP2 category in an Oreca 07-Gibson.
With the super season featuring two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Venezuelan raced twice at the French endurance classic, in 2018 and 2019, finishing ninth overall and fifth in class in the first, and DNFing in the second.
Isotta Fraschini’s programme will be run by British-based team Vector Sport. Vector’s team principal, Gary Holland, told MotorsportWeek.com at Sebring that, in regards to drivers, his phone was busy.
“The door is being beaten down, I’m going to be honest,” he said.
“And, and rightfully so, it’s a proper project. It’s a proper hybrid hypercar and the boutique brand, the heritage, high-end brand that Isotta Fraschini is. It should attract the right drivers, the right partners, the right teams.
“So yeah, we’re in the right place. We don’t need to jump at the first driver that comes forward. We we can afford to make sure we make that decision once.
Vector Sport’s current line up in LMP2 comprises of Ryan Cullen, Gabriel Aubry, and Mathias Kaiser. It is not known if either of these three will drive for the Isotta Fraschini project when the car makes its planned debut at the 6 Hours of Monza in July.
