Will Stevens is itching to race Manor’s 2015 car and believes they will be “much more competitive” when it hits track later this season.
The revived outfit was forced to use a modified 2014 chassis after making it back on the grid having exited bankruptcy just weeks before the opening race in Australia.
The team are however hard at work on a completely new car which is nearing completion, and looks set to debut after the summer break – though that decision is up for discussion according to the team.
Stevens is keen to get behind the wheel of the new car after admitting he’s tired of fighting with just one other car on track.
“We have no rivals,” said the Briton. “The only person I am fighting is my team-mate,” he told GrandPrix247, referring to Roberto Merhi.
“Our priority is to get the new car [on track] as quickly as possible. I think we will then be much more competitive.”
The 23-year-old is having a hard time impressing rival teams because of the situation he finds himself in. Whilst he’s beaten his team-mate consistently, the lack of upgrades on Manor’s car means progress is nigh on impossible.
“I want to prove that I am ready for a career in F1,” he added. “It helps that we are able to compare what we are doing with what the drivers did last year.
“But my only real rival is my team-mate, so the goal is to be ahead of him in every session.”
