After his retirement from the F1 Azerbaijan GP, Lance Stroll was caught in a heated exchange with a marshal in newly released fan footage.
The Baku weekend did not go well for Stroll. Following another issue with the AMR26, the Aston Martin driver was forced to park the car and retire from the race. The Canadian has yet to secure points this season as Aston Martin continues to suffer. Stroll has classified in only four Grand Prix this season, while the rest have ended in DNFs.
While attempting to make a return to the paddock after his retirement in Baku, Stroll was filmed in a heated exchange with a marshal. The marshal calmly approached Stroll and likely explained that he had to wait until the end of the race to get through.
The Canadian was then heard saying, “I’m not waiting here until the end of the session. I’m out of here.”
“Give me the radio”, Stroll added after the marshal spoke.
The footage ends with the marshal escorting the driver away from the fence. The tight street circuit often makes it difficult for drivers to get back to the paddock if they face an early exit from the race. Because of the track’s layout, drivers often have to find another way back to the paddock around the track. Stroll apparently was not prepared to take a longer route around.
Stroll claims ‘probably no positives’ after Baku
Speaking to the media after the Azerbaijan GP, Stroll denied knowing of any problem with the car that led to his retirement. When he was told this was a recurring topic after every race, Stroll seemed prepared for the same questions to continue in the near future.
“We’re going to be having many more of these conversations because we’re not bringing many upgrades this year,” the Canadian said.
“Things aren’t changing right now. We’re planning more for next year, so this year we know it’s going to be like this.”
“No, there are not many positives right now. Probably no positives.” Stroll replied after being told that having this issue already, with a new engine, was not a great sign.
Despite both Aston Martin drivers taking several new components beyond the limit and facing a grid penalty, neither finished the race. With the team only having one point this season, their campaign has been an uphill battle.
