Fortescue Zero will join the FIA Formula E World Championship as a full customer entry for the 2026/27 season, taking over Penske’s Formula E operations and running Jaguar powertrains in the upcoming GEN4 era.
Subject to FEO and FIA approval, the newly created Fortescue Zero racing and innovation team intends to become the first Australian-owned outfit on the Formula E grid.
The high-performance engineering arm—formerly Williams Advanced Engineering—has served as a long-standing technical partner to the series, supplying battery intelligence and acting as the official Pit Boost provider across recent seasons.
“For more than a decade Fortescue Zero has been the brains behind some of the groundbreaking technologies powering and transforming electric racing,” said Gus Pichot, Fortescue Growth and Energy CEO.
“Now, we’re going to show the world how we can compete on the track as well. Progressing from the pit lane to the grid is the next chapter in our motorsports story. We’re here to race, to win and to innovate.”
Fortescue Zero acquired an existing Formula E team
To secure its grid slot, Fortescue acquired Jay Penske’s Formula E operation. Penske expressed confidence in the handover, stating: “Fortescue Zero has a clear ambition for electric technology and motorsport and we know it will build upon the great foundations we have laid and lead to future success.”
The team will compete as a customer outfit powered by Jaguar’s GEN4 powertrain.
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds welcomed the move, highlighting Fortescue Zero’s role as an essential technology partner since the championship’s inception.
“Formula E is pushing electric racing to another level, creating completely new engineering challenges,” added Travis Hester, Fortescue Zero Electromobility CTO.
“That is exactly where we want to be, at the front of the grid, solving difficult problems and finding the next competitive advantage.”
