The NTT IndyCar Series has announced that it will run an updated fuel formulation for the 2027 racing season.
The fuel will continue to be supplied by Shell, and will incorporate a significant portion of domestically sourced ethanol produced from waste stream recapture.
Ethanol feedstock used in the formulation will now be sourced from the state of Indiana, home of IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The new formulation will be a ‘drop-in’ change, meaning there should be little to no adjustments needed from Chevrolet and Honda to utilize the new fuel formula.
Connections between IndyCar, its partners, and the community are a consistent priority for the series, and this new change helps to strengthen those connections.
The updated fuel will continue to be 100% renewable and will see a 70% reduction in greenhouse gasses compared to standard renewable fuel baselines.
“Indiana is an agricultural and racing powerhouse, and this exciting partnership aligns two of our state’s proudest industries,” said Indiana House speaker Todd Huston.
“By using renewable ethanol sourced here in Indiana to fuel IndyCar, we’re supporting Hoosier farmers and producers while showcasing Indiana innovation on a global stage. I’m proud to see Indiana agriculture powering the future of racing.”
Shell became IndyCar’s fuel supplier beginning in the 2023 season, succeeding Speedway and Sunoco, which were previous suppliers to the series.
The partnership has been successful during that time, and includes all lubricants and oils used within the series as well as the fuel.
Team Penske also has ongoing partnerships with the global fuel brand in the form of sponsorships and livery designs on its team’s cars throughout the year.
Shell reiterated the research done to provide motorsport fuels has great impacts all the way down the production line to help make gains on the consumer side as well.
