Liam Lawson hopes for F1 future guarantee over summer

Liam Lawson hopes discussions regarding his Formula 1 future will begin during the summer break.

With the summer break underway, the time away from the race track often provides an opportunity for teams and drivers to discuss their contracts and future line-ups.

At Racing Bulls, the question of Liam Lawson looms, with the Kiwi unsure of what the future holds for him.

Lawson has had a strong season up until the summer break, taking 43 points for the Racing Bulls team. He’s outperformed the results of his rookie teammate Arvid Lindblad, who’s managed only 23 points.

However, Lawson’s path is uncertain. Racing Bulls has traditionally been a team for developing the younger talents at Red Bull before moving them up into the main team. Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar both took that path.

Lawson did too. He replaced Sergio Perez initially in the 2025 season but was demoted back to Racing Bulls after just two races. Leaving the question of whether he would return to Red Bull in the future unclear.

There’s also the subject of Nikola Tsolov, the Red Bull junior who currently leads the Formula 2 championship. Should he win the title, he wouldn’t be able to continue in the feeder series and would potentially be up for the F1 seat.

Racing Bulls boss Alan Permane confirmed the interest that Tsolov is “next in line” at Red Bull. Subsequently leaving him on the ‘radar’ for next season.

Lawson confessed that the future is still largely a mystery for him, stating he had ‘no idea’ what next season looked like for him.

“Oh, me personally? I actually have no idea.” He told the media when asked if sorting his future was a priority for the Kiwi.

“I think that stuff… that conversation is normally around summer break. So I’m sure there’ll be discussions around that.”

With the F2 championship ongoing until Abu Dhabi, the team will likely make their decision before the title fight is wrapped up on whether they wish to promote Tsolov.
