IndyCar has announced plans for the first on-track test runs of its newly revealed IR-28 chassis.

Just announced earlier in the week, the new Dallara chassis is set to replace the current DW-12 for the 2028 racing season.

The first running is set to be completed by 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi this Saturday afternoon.

A second session is scheduled for Sunday, when four-time series champion Alex Palou will climb into the cockpit.

Both tests will be completed on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

Rossi and Palou are drivers for Chevrolet and Honda-powered teams currently, a conscious decision to make sure that feedback of the early access is as equitable as possible.

Although separate Honda and Chevy engines will not be fitted for this test, and a common, non-final-spec 2.4-liter engine will be fitted for the entire weekend.

The 2.44-mile IMS road course layout and smooth track surface provide an ideal location for initial testing, and the track’s garages will surely help with preparations between runs.

Media and limited fan access will be granted to the speedway for the test sessions, allowing for the public to get its first look at the new design.

Weather is predicted to be wet for most of the day Saturday, although it is unknown if that could delay the sessions or if plans will allow for first runs to be completed with wet tires.
