Marc Marquez says he doesn’t understand what led to his crash during the MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez.
The Spaniard started the Grand Prix in second place but was unable to hold off his team-mate Francesco Bagnaia in a tense first-lap battle.
A crash at Turn 7 on Lap 3 ended Marquez’s chances of securing a ninth win of the season, though he managed to rejoin and finish 12th.
As a result, following his brother Alex Marquez’s victory, the six-time MotoGP champion now finds himself one point behind in the standings.
“It’s a mistake and we need to learn about it and try to avoid it for the future if we want to fight for the championship,” he stated to Crash.net.
“We have a lot of speed, but one more time… Austin I understood why I crashed, but today I don’t understand.
“I need to analyse it because I was not attacking, I was cruising just like I did in the first races behind them because that I know that the second part of the race is my strong point.
“But it’s like this, we need to accept it.”

Marc Marquez shows he has ‘pace’ but needs to cut out ‘mistakes’
Marquez isn’t overly discouraged by his crash because he’s confident in his pace and is focused on learning from his mistakes.
“It makes me happy,” the 32-year-old replied when questioned if his pace made the crash more frustrating.
“Of course, if you don’t have the pace and you crash you have two things to fix: the crash plus the pace.
“The pace is there, but just we need to avoid the mistakes. Of course, the second part of the race was my strong point.
“But [I need to] try to learn for the future. But inside the drama, we are only one point behind the leader, which is the most important thing.”
Marc Marquez discusses his younger brother’s maiden MotoGP win
Despite his race ultimately going down the pan, he raced to the parc ferme post-race to congratulate his younger brother on his first MotoGP win.
Marquez admitted that his younger brother’s elusive win was the only positive of his day.
“It’s the only thing that today I have a small smile and I’m super happy and super proud for him, especially because he worked super hard to win a race in MotoGP,” he added.
“It was one of the targets of his career. He won the race, he’s leading again the championship, he’s riding in an amazing way. So, I’m proud of him.”
