Dries Vanthoor topped the timesheets for BMW at Long Beach, making it two sessions out of two where both BMWs led.
The Belgian, in the #24 BMW M Hybrid V8, set a 1:12.201 to go quickest. He was 0.141 ahead of his teammate, first session top man Sheldon van der Linde in the sister #25 car.
In third was Jack Aitken, in the #31 Action Express Cadillac V-Series.R, almost three tenths off Vanthoor.
The two Porsches were fourth and fifth, Mathieu Jaminet in the #6 ahead of Felipe Nasr in the #7. The two Acuras placed sixth and seventh, #60’s Tom Blomqvist ahead of Nick Yelloly in the #93.
The 1h30m session featured four red flags throughout, which disrupted team run plans.
In GTD, Robert Wickens, making his IMSA Sportscar Championship debut this weekend, was quickest onboard the #36 DXDT Racing Corvette Z06 GT3.R.
The Canadian, who uses had controls after his Indycar accident in 2018 caused him to lose the use of his legs, set a 1:17.897. This was just over two tenths quicker than Jonny Edgar in the #77 AO Racing ‘Rexy’ Porsche 911 GT3R. Third was Jack Hawksworth in the #12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3, just a few hundredths off Edgar.
