Reigning 24 Hours of Daytona winner Dane Cameron has revelled in the ease of pressure ahead of his maiden IMSA LMP2 campaign with AO Racing.
The reigning IMSA SportsCar Champion in the GTP class spoke ahead of the Daytona season-opener on 25-26 January where he will begin his drive in AO Racing’s #99 Oreca 07 LMP2.
“Definitely something new to go with AO, a really nice opportunity,” he told selected media including Motorsport Week.
“I’m excited to partner with PJ [Hyett]. He’s had a really good experience with the Rolex 24.
“He’s had a pretty strong progression, being pretty new to the sport, but it was pretty impressive last year.
“Then obviously what they were able to achieve in GTD Pro with Lauren [Heinrich], also super impressive.
“So the LMP2 side is a bit newer, but I think everybody’s hoping that we can make a good jump forward and put Spike also in contention to win a championship.
“It’s nice to go back to Daytona with kind-of the weight off the shoulders for sure.
“That was always tough to go there every year with a lot of expectation and pressure from myself to try to get that one done.
“So it’s nice to go there without that for once but yeah, pretty excited about the line-up we have… Christian [Rasmussen] was a superstar last year in LMP2.
Didn’t know much about Johnny [Edgar], but been super impressed with him so far through the testing. Had some couple of days running pretty much straight away after the season.
“… I think we have a great chance to not only win Daytona, but the championship as well.”
Cameron as multi-champion ahead of LMP2 endeavour
Cameron won last year’s running of the Daytona 24H with teammates Felipe Nasr, Matt Campbell and reigning IndyCar and two-time Indy 500 champion Josef Newgarden.
He secured his fourth championship title in 2024 having first claimed GTD class glory 11 years ago with Turner Motorsport.
Cameron’s extensive level of IMSA prototype experience included with the likes of Action Express Racing, Team Penske, and Meyer Shank.
He drove with Acura Team Penske from 2018-20 before returning to them at the beginning of their Porsche LMDh era (2022).
Whilst 2025 marks his first LMP2 campaign, Cameron drew previous LMP2 experience in the FIA World Endurance Championship with Penske.
The upcoming IMSA season opener will mark the first of seven rounds involving the LMP2 category in the multi-class competition.
AO Racing will contest against 11 other Oreca 07s as Cameron will seek out LMP2 victory for the first time.
