Kevin Magnussen is to be banned from the next round of the Formula 1 World Championship after gaining a fresh set of penalty points at the Italian Grand Prix.
The Dane was involved in a clash with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly at the Roggia chicane on the Monza circuit, for which he was handed a 10 second time penalty and two penalty points.
Magnussen is yet to respond formally to the decision, but criticised the time penalty over the radio mid-race, saying: “Neither cars have damage…No consequence at all. Ten seconds. Makes sense.”
The Haas driver had earlier incurred 10, and had been on that total since the Miami Grand Prix, and today’s incident takes him to the limit before a race ban is introduced.
Now set to miss the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, it is likely that Formula 2 driver Oliver Bearman, who is already confirmed to drive for the American team from next season, will replace him.
It will be the Englishman’s second F1 start, having been a late replacement for Carlos Sainz at Ferrari – for whom he is an Academy Driver – at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at Jeddah earlier this year, scoring a brilliant seventh place.
Magnussen becomes the first recipient of such a punishment in Formula 1 from the FIA since the rule was introduced, and is only the fifth driver overall, with four F2 drivers having previously been handed such a reprimand.
