Lewis Hamilton pipped Lando Norris to the top spot on the timesheets during second practice at Formula 1’s Italian Grand Prix, as Kevin Magnussen endured a crash.
Hamilton posted a 1:20.738s on his low-fuel simulation to go 0.003s quicker than Norris in the McLaren, with less than two-tenths covering the top five drivers in FP2.
The Briton managed to set the quickest time minutes prior to Magnussen losing the rear of his Haas car heading into the opening Lesmo and spinning into the barrier.
Ferrari made the Tifosi in the grandstands delirious when Charles Leclerc headed team-mate Carlos Sainz, but Norris and later Hamilton pushed them down the order.
Sainz wound up with the third quickest time overall, with Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren splitting the two upgraded Ferrari SF-24 cars as Leclerc dropped to fifth.
Nico Hulkenberg managed a much more assured outing than his team-mate as he posted the sixth in the sole Haas that will not require repair work prior to tomorrow.
Daniel Ricciardo, running the old-spec RB package, was an encouraging seventh, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll in the Aston Martin cars next up on the times.
Valtteri Bottas replicated his strong pace from FP1 as he rounded out the top 10 to provide some promise to Sauber as it strives to end its pointless run this weekend.
Magnussen remained in 11th despite his involvement being curtailed past the mid-point, while the Red Bull cars languished down the order around the lower midfield.
Max Verstappen made an error at Parabolica on his single push attempt and wouldn’t get another crack, with Sergio Perez’s session beginning in the Red Bull garage.
The Mexican would venture out onto the track and would end up in 14th place, one position behind Verstappen. Yuki Tsunoda placed 15th in the updated RB machine.
Williams debutant Franco Colapinto was next up, four spots and fewer than two tenths back from team-mate Albon, with the two Alpine drivers slotting in behind him.
Zhou Guanyu was unable to match Bottas’ pace in the second Sauber C45 car and was rooted to 19th place, with George Russell’s Mercedes bringing up the last spot.
