Williams has explained the choice to replace Logan Sargeant with Franco Colapinto in the 2024 Formula 1 season will give the team “the best chance” to score points.
The Grove-based squad has announced prior to the Italian Grand Prix this weekend that Colapinto will complete the remaining nine races in the FW46 with Alex Albon.
Sargeant was due to step aside once the term ends as the team welcomes Carlos Sainz, but Williams boss James Vowles conceded a change could transpire sooner.
The writing appeared to be on the wall last weekend as Sargeant sustained an avoidable crash in FP3 at Zandvoort which dismantled Williams’ latest update package.
Vowles was reported to have had discussions with Red Bull over loaning Liam Lawson, while Mercedes was willing to see reserve driver Mick Schumacher back in F1.
But while those two have not been provided with the call to hop in a race drive mid-season, Sargeant has lost his place as Williams has decided to promote Colapinto.
Vowles has claimed that the decision has been made with competitive interests in mind as the team seeks to climb higher than its current ninth spot in the standings.
“To replace a driver mid-season is not a decision we have taken lightly,” Vowles expressed.
“But we believe this gives Williams the best chance to compete for points over the remainder of the season.
“We have just brought a large upgrade to the car and need to maximise every points-scoring opportunity in a remarkably tight midfield battle.
“We also believe in investing in our young drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy,
and Franco is getting a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate what he is capable of across the final nine rounds of the season.
“This is undoubtedly incredibly tough on Logan, who has given his all throughout his time with Williams, and we want to thank him for all his hard work and positive attitude.
“Logan remains a talented driver and we will support him to continue his racing career for the future.
“I know that Franco has great speed and huge potential, and we look forward to seeing what he can do in Formula 1.”
Colapinto has been embedded into the Williams Driver Academe since January 2023 and conducted his F1 grand prix debut earlier this season in FP1 at Silverstone.
The Argentine driver has conceded that it will be a daunting task to get up to speed, but one that he is relishing as he makes the step from Formula 2 to the top flight.
“It is an honour to be making my Formula 1 debut with Williams – this is what dreams are made of,” Colapinto said.
“The team has such amazing history and a mission to get back to the front which I can’t wait to be part of.
“Coming into F1 mid-season will be an enormous learning curve but I am up for the challenge, and I’m fully focused on working as hard as I can with Alex and the team to make it a success.”
Williams just weren`t left with any choice other than to replace him.
