Aston Martin Test and Reserve Driver Stoffel Vandoorne will get his first taste of the AMR24 in a two-day Pirelli tyre test following the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix.
The Belgian will get behind the wheel of the Silverstone-based squad’s 2024 F1 challenger on Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 July at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
Vandoorne, 32, made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 2016 at the Bahrain GP, standing in for Fernando Alonso, who he then partnered for two seasons full-time in 2017 and ’18.
He then lost his race seat and has performed reserve driver duties at McLaren, Mercedes and now Aston Martin (since 2023) and conveyed his enthusiasm at getting the chance to test the AMR24 next week.
“I’m really looking forward to driving the AMR24 for the first-time next week in Spa,” he said.
“It always feels special to be back behind the wheel of a Formula One car, and even more special to be doing it at my home circuit.
“As an official test, we’ll be running different tyre compounds and constructions to provide Pirelli with feedback.
“With some high and low-speed corners it provides a useful range of data points and there’s usually a high chance of some wet weather running too.”
In addition to his Reserve Driver duties with Aston Martin, Vandoorne races in both the FIA World Endurance and Formula E championships.
His outings in FIA WEC are undertaken as a member of Peugeot’s Hypercar effort, sharing the #94 9X8 with Paul di Resta and Loic Duval.
In Formula E, Vandoorne became World Champion in 2022 with Mercedes and he recently concluded his 2024 campaign with DS Penske, finishing 10th in the Drivers’ standings.
