Mercedes Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has expressed he holds an “interest” in MotoGP’s growth amid speculation that he could acquire the Gresini Ducati team.
The Race reported that a member of Hamilton’s entourage was present at Assen last weekend with the Italian operation amid rumours regarding a potential takeover.
Hamilton has harboured a long-time passion for two-wheeled racing, having accompanied Valentino Rossi on the track at Valencia where he raced on a Yamaha bike.
Following the passing of owner Fausto Gresini in 2021, his wife Nadia Padovani took over the reins as its CEO and owner.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that MotoGP would be the latest purchase from Liberty Media, the current owners of F1.
This new era for MotoGP could provide a significant opportunity to convert current F1 fans into MotoGP fans. A potential acquisition from the seven-time champion Hamilton could lead to MotoGP’s prosperity in the long term.
When asked at Silverstone ahead of the British Grand Prix, Hamilton said: “Well, I’ve always loved MotoGP.
“I’m interested in the potential growth, but I haven’t looked that far into it. But anything is possible.”
Hamilton is no stranger to investing in sports. In 2022, it was announced that he was the partial owner of the National Football League team Denver Broncos.
“I’m definitely interested in, as I said before, about equity and already with the [Denver] Broncos, it was already a first step in team ownership. And so, yeah, I think over the next five to ten years, there will be hopefully more.”
