The NTT IndyCar Series has announced that three drivers will have grid penalties for this weekend’s race at Mid-Ohio.
Marcus Armstrong, Pietro Fittipaldi, and Felix Rosenqvist have all fallen foul of the series limits on engine usage, and will drop down the order before the green flag on Sunday.
The three drivers, who are members of Chip Ganassi Racing, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, and Meyer Shank Racing, are all powered by Honda engines.
The penalties for excessive engine use are a product of the number of engines each entry has used throughout the season to this point, meaning failures earlier in the season are beginning to cause extra heartache for the manufacturer.
In addition to the grid penalties, each driver will no longer earn manufacturer points for Honda with the engines used through the end of the season.
All three drivers will be assessed a six-place penalty after qualifying on account of Mid-Ohio being a road course.
If the penalty would have been assessed at one of the oval rounds that fills the schedule for the rest of the season, each driver would have been forced to drop nine positions.
This weekend’s penalties coincide with the introduction of the long-awaited hybrid power units, although that system is separate from the 2.2-liter ICE that is the focus of the rule that was broken.
The Honda Indy 200 gets underway on Sunday, July 7 at 1:45 PM eastern time.
