McLaren’s Lando Norris opened Formula 1’s British Grand Prix atop the timesheets.
Norris, on Soft tyres, posted a time of 1:27.420s to finish 0.134s clear of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, in cool and cloudy conditions at Silverstone.
Norris’ McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri was third-fastest, also on Soft tyres, though suffered a hydraulics issue during the closing stages of the session.
Piastri crawled back and made it as far as the pit entry, before being wheeled back into the pit lane.
Max Verstappen was the fastest Medium-shod runner in fourth position, less than a hundredth of a second clear of lead Mercedes driver George Russell.
Fernando Alonso used Softs to split the Medium-shod Mercedes pair, with eight-time British Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton following behind in seventh spot.
Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finished eighth and ninth respectively, with Alpine’s Esteban Ocon rounding out the top 10.
Four non-race drivers participated in the session, including recently confirmed 2025 Haas driver Oliver Bearman.
Bearman was the fastest of the crop, in 14th position, with Alpine’s Jack Doohan 17th, Williams’ Franco Colapinto 18th on his FP1 debut, and Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar 19th.
Hadjar was involved in a near-miss with pacesetter Norris during the closing stages when the Briton almost cannoned into the rear of the slow-moving Red Bull through the exit of Farm curve.
Norris managed to avoid Hadjar, who immediately offered his apologies, confirming that he did not see the fast-approaching McLaren driver.
RB’s Yuki Tsunoda brought out the red flags during the early stages of the session after spinning into the gravel through Luffield.
