Campos driver Isack Hadjar secured his maiden F2 pole position, vital to keep his championship dreams alive. Martins and Hauger completed the top three.
The rain was a big threat for the Formula 2 qualifying session, making the first run crucial in case the track got worse due to the weather conditions.
Dennis Hauger was the first one setting a fast time, but he went too wide into Copse and got his time beaten quickly by Zane Maloney, who had a terrible weekend last time out in Austria.
Kush Maini improved into the provisional pole, but the newly-announced Haas Formula 1 driver Ollie Bearman quickly overtook him, with championship leader Paul Aron behind into P2.
After the first flying lap, all the drivers went into a cooldown lap to prepare for their second run.
Hauger improved his time, going into provisional pole ahead of Bearman, but got surpassed by Maloney and O’Sullivan shortly after.
Maini briefly got the fastest time but this changed as soon as Aron finished his second lap, going into the provisional pole with a 1:40:181.
Joshua Durksen and Pepe Martin got their laps deleted due to track limit infringements.
With 14 minutes on the clock of the session, all the drivers went into the pitlane to replace their Pirelli Soft tyres for new sets ahead of the second and definitive run around the Silverstone circuit.
The order after the first run: Aron, Maini, O’Sullivan, Maloney, Hauger, Bearman, Hadjar, Bortoleto, Martins and Antonelli.
The whole field started to line up on the pitlane queue with 11 minutes to go.
While on his out lap, Aron had an uncharacteristic spin after touching the Turn 1 apex too much, ruining his tyres.
MP claimed the first two spots of the charts after their laps, with Colapinto ahead of Hauger. Shortly after, Hadjar managed to go into provisional pole for Campos with ART’s Victor Martins right behind him.
Antonelli got into sixth, behind his Prema teammate which jumped to fourth. With all these improvements, Aron was down to tenth.
Maloney set the purple first sector during his last attempt, but he only was able to go up to ninth.
O’Sullivan, who was up to fifth, got his time deleted and dropped to 15th.
Hadjar, despite going into the pitlane with two and a half minutes to go, got the fastest time and claimed pole position after his run with the Red Bull in FP1 earlier in the morning in F1.
This is a vital result for the Campos driver in terms of the championship, especially considering Aron’s mistake that put him down into 12th.
Victor Martins managed a fantastic last lap to secure a front-row start, ahead of the MP Motorsport duo with Hauger ahead of Colapinto.
Bearman finished fifth, ahead of Bortoleto, Jack Crawdford, and Maini.
Maloney, who finish ninth will start from the front row on the Sprint race with Antonelli on pole after completing the top 10 of the qualifying session.
