Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso chose to inspire the youth of Spain ahead of this weekend’s Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix by hosting a series of STEM workshops.
Held in his hometown of Oviedo, Asturias, at the Museo y Circuito Fernando Alonso, the two-time F1 champion helped deliver a plethora of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) to 30 lucky school students.
In addition to STEM-focused activities, Alonso led karting sessions with fellow Spaniard and Aston Martin Ambassador Pedro de la Rosa, who was also on hand to inspire the next generation of Spanish F1 enthusiasts.
Aston Martin and fuel partner Aramco are no stranger to collaborating on STEM/Karting sessions, having hosted two more so far this season in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Shanghai, China.
“At Aramco, we believe in pushing the limits of possibility through sport, and we are using sports as a platform to drive innovation, create opportunity, improve lives and positively impact society,” said Aramco’s Marketing, Partnership & Sponsorship Manager Rania Biltagi.
“Together with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, we seek to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, sports fans and even racing drivers.
“Through these fantastic events, we hope that we continue to ignite the innovative, inclusive, and passionate potential within the youth, who will be the STEM leaders of tomorrow.”
Alonso, a hero to many in Spain due to his continually impressive exploits in F1 was overwhelmingly positive to have held the event in his home town.
“It’s always special to speak with younger generations and see their passion for motor racing,” said Alonso.
“Motorsports has grown in popularity over the years in Spain and we hope to see more Spanish talent making it into the highest level of racing.
“Aramco is extremely passionate about this topic and it’s great to see such a fantastic program to help these students across many of the STEM disciplines.
“It was very special to host this event in my hometown and museum. Events like this one today help to engage those battling to make it through the ranks in their chosen disciplines, and raise the interest levels for racing, which leaves a lasting mark in the region and country.”
Alonso is poised to contest his home round this weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya after finishing sixth last time out in Montreal, Canada.
The Spaniard currently sits ninth in the Drivers’ standings with 41 points.
