The FIM, IRTA, and Dorna Sports have announced new dates for the inaugural 2024 Grand Prix of Kazakhstan on Wednesday with the race set to take place in late September.
The inaugural Kazakhstan GP was supposed to have taken place in 2023 but the circuit wasn’t ready due to homologation works at the circuit.
The 2024 edition was postponed due to severe flooding across the area causing a national emergency, meaning the race had to vacate from its original dates of the 14th to the 16th of June.
The Sokol International Racetrack will now host GP motorcycle racing for the first time September 20-22 as the first race on the Asian leg of the 2024 MotoGP calendar.
These dates were originally held for the Indian Grand Prix, but due to that race being postponed till 2025 as the season’s opener, it left a free weekend slot for Kazakhstan to fill.
The Kazakh race weekend signals the start of the flyaway races in Indonesia, Japan, Australia, Thailand, and Malaysia to follow before the season finale back in Europe at Valencia.
Indonesia hosts its round of the 2024 MotoGP season on September 27-29 with the Japanese concluding a triple-header of Grands Prix on October 04-06.
As it stands, reports indicate that the Sokhol circuit is complete, with infrastructure needing to be sorted in time for its September debut.
Issues such as road access, timekeeping and internet connection have been touted as the final hurdles to ensure Kazakhstan can deliver a MotoGP weekend efficiently.
