Charlie Wurz said he was “very happy” and felt privileged to have experienced father Alex by his side as he contests his rookie FIA Formula 3 campaign.
Alex Wurz is a name known to many fans of not only Formula 1, but global motorsport.
A two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans Winner, advisor to the Toyota FIA World Endurance Championship squad and Chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers Association, there’s no better mentor for Charlie to have in his corner than father Alex.
Heading to Imola this weekend, Charlie once again has his father by his side in the Jenzer Motorsport garage and no doubt will be able to draw on Alex’s podium success with McLaren during the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix.
“Yeah so it definitely helps to have my dad with me,” said Wurz.
“He’s here this weekend, he was also there in Australia, a track he drove before so he gave me some tips because it was a new track for me.
“So just from his advice and all of that definitely really helps.
“I’m really happy to have him by my side and always if I have a question or something I can always go and ask him and generally he has some kind of answer for me with his 20 years or so of experience.
“When I’m not sure about something or maybe I need to explain something to the team I’m not exactly sure how to word it, it always helps to have him with me to just help me put those things into words.”
Wurz also commented on how the fast-paced nature of an F3 weekend, whereby a single practice session proceeds qualifying and two races, requires a steely type.
The teenager also credited his father for helping him in this aspect.
“In F3 you can’t change so much during a race weekend because you go straight from free practice with let’s say two/three laps into quali so you sort of have to be on it straight away,” said Wurz.
“I think training with him [Alex Wurz] at home you know on the bike at the gym whatever also helps so I think all of it is a combination and I’m very happy to have the privilege of having my father with me.”
