Charles Leclerc went fastest in a sunny opening practice at Imola with a 1:16.990s lap-time, bettering George Russell and Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz.
Russell was just over a tenth shy of Leclerc’s effort, with Sainz 0.130s back from his team-mate.
The Red Bulls were fourth and fifth, with Sergio Perez leading team-mate Max Verstappen, who struggled throughout the session and finished a quarter of a second back from Leclerc’s time.
Yuki Tsunoda had an impressive showing in sixth for RB, ahead of Lewis Hamilton in seventh.
Miami Grand Prix winner Lando Norris posted the eighth fastest time, ahead of McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, who finished ninth and 10th respectively.
Haas Reserve Driver Ollie Bearman finished 15th in what is the first of six FP1 sessions for the young Brit in 2024.
