Dennis praises drivers’ skill in peloton racing

Andretti’s Jake Dennis has praised his fellow FIA Formula E drivers for possessing the skill to avoid more accidents in the hectic peloton style races that have been so prevalent in the last month of the championship.

Dennis, who was in the wars in both races over the double-header weekend in Berlin, has been one of the drivers less vocal in their dislike of the peloton racing, with Jean-Eric Vergne making serious claims to the media about potentially quitting the sport if it were to continue, whereas Antonio Felix da Costa has said he will accept it if the fans like it, as well as branding the style for “real racers”.

Some drivers have previously talked about the possibility of a meeting between them to discuss the issue, and when asked by Motorsport Week whether he would defend peloton if such a meeting were to take place, Dennis was reticent about the prospect.

“We can stand here and say that but I have crashed in two races,” he said, adding: “you have to have a lot respect with the drivers you’re racing against, and the contacts I’ve had is where the driver is complete oblivious to the fact I’m here.

“We just need the drivers to be fully aware, and if we are, then we generally survive, and 99.9 percent of the time, we are.

“It’s just that 0.1 percent of the time.

“When I’m watching these races live in-front of me, the amount of times there should have been a crash, and then we’re talented enough to not make it one and the public don’t see that, but inside of the car, there are so many instances where you say ‘fair play’ to both drivers for avoiding it.

“In junior categories, it would just be chaos.”

Peloton will most likely continue in the next rounds of the championship in Shanghai, a race taking place on a yet-to-be-revealed revised layout of the city’s Formula One circuit.
