Reigning LMP2 Le Mans 24 Hours winner Fabio Scherer joins former class winner David Heinemeier-Hansson and the 2023 European Le Mans Series champion Kyffin Simpson in Nielsen Racing’s Le Mans lineup.
Nielsen Racing has confirmed their driver lineup for this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans on 15-16 June, featuring two former LMP2 Le Mans winners and the outgoing ELMS champion who will make his Le Mans debut.
The team will run their #24 Oreca 07 Gibson for the 92nd running of the prestigious endurance race which will mark their fourth start.
Hansson currently drives for Nielsen Racing in their ELMS LMP2 campaign, which recently completed the 4 Hours of Le Castellet, whilst Scherer tested one of the team’s Oreca 07s during last year’s ELMS Rookie Test.
The Swiss driver competes for United Autosports in the ELMS, but will take on Le Mans for Nielsen Racing having won with Inter Europol Competition last year.
“I am really excited to come back to the place where my career and my life changed,” said Scherer.
“To fight again for victory at Le Mans will be very special.
“It is great to be back in a competitive car—not just a car—once again.
“Nielsen Racing has an excellent track record, and I am happy to be driving with David. It was always nice to have him as my teammate [during the 2022 ELMS season at Inter Europol Competition].
“We also welcome Kyffin Simpson from IndyCar, which will be good.
“The Nielsen car has looked strong this year and was up there last year at Le Mans, so it should be a strong package to enable me to challenge for the top spot and defend my win from last year.”
Simpson, the 19-year-old, added: “I’m excited to join Nielsen Racing for my 24 Hours of Le Mans debut.
“I enjoyed getting back into an LMP2 for Daytona, so it’s great to be racing with a successful team to go for a class win at Le Mans.
“Work begins immediately with some simulator time this week.
“I can’t wait to join Fabio and David at the track.”
