Jaguar TCS Racing has given FIA Formula E a further boost with the announcement that the team have become the second in the sport to commit to the upcoming GEN4 era, ensuring its status in the series until at least 2030.
In a press conference in Monaco ahead of tomorrow’s E-Prix in the prestigious principality, the British squad became the second team – after Nissan – to announce that it will be assuring its status as a Formula E team for the foreseeable future.
With over 100 races under its belt, 13 race wins and 37 podium finishes, Jaguar is one of the longest-serving and most successful in FE history, and it seems that the big cat of motorsport has big ambitions to match.
When asked if – given many wrote-off Formula E upon the sport’s creation – it was on the right side of history, Jaguar’s Team Principal James Barclay told Motorsport Week:
“I remember being in the Shard in 2015 when Jaguar returned to racing after 12 years, and that point in time, going into Formula E was quite surprising to many, but for us, it was very clear, as a climate change convention happened that year, it was a bookmark that the world was going to change on those issues.
“We didn’t follow our competition in traditional motorsport, we wanted to lead from the front and that was important to us – it’s in our DNA that it’s what we’ve always done, so from our perspective, it was the right time and place.
“I think if we look at the journey Formula E has gone on, manufacturers have come and gone, new teams have joined and in we’ve had an incredible history in just ten years, so I think the decision is vindicated, the future is really exciting, and its an amazing time in motorsport with F1 having success, and Formula E is growing at an incredible rate, and as a start-up sport or ten years in, it’s amazing what it has achieved.
“I think Formula E is still in its infancy – it has a long future ahead and a bright future ahead, the ingredients are unparalleled, we just need to work together to nurture those in the best way, because if we do that, the sport has incredible potential for the future.”
