Jake Dennis acknowledged that the extreme peloton style racing at Misano last weekend benefitted his Andretti team, after what was two poor qualifying results.
The reigning FIA Formula E World Champion told Motorsport Week that, despite being level on points with Pascal Wehrlein at the top of the Drivers’ Championship after Misano, his title defence in Season 10 hasn’t gone particularly to plan.
“We’re really not on schedule in terms of where we should be with performance,” he said.
“The racing result [was] just a really good effort from the team and me to drag a result out of it.
“If everything goes a bit more, less energy-saving, we would have come home with a P15 or a P10, but thankfully the way the racing was, it allowed me to move forward, and we have one of the most efficient powertrains on the grid which allowed me to move forward, but we are really struggling with a few things.”
Ahead of next week’s single race weekend in Monaco, Dennis said the twisty principality street circuit will provide a sort of race that is back to normality for Formula E, and was open-minded about how the Misano races have not been the norm in terms of style so far this season.
“It’s only been two races like that, every race this year, apart from Brazil a little bit, has been pretty much flat-out – Saudi, Mexico, in Tokyo, after lights-out, whoever was leading was probably going to win.
“I think Monaco last year was a perfect balance, I started ninth and finished second, so you can definitely move forward, but you didn’t see the extreme of what we saw today.”
